Fat Removal - Liposculpture
Liposculpture has helped reshape countless men and women who have been unhappy with those stubborn areas of unwanted fat. By removing fat cells from areas such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, chin, and male 'breasts', liposculpture can prevent individuals from regaining their problem shape. However many people regard this procedure as an alternative to dieting or an answer to their weight problem, when neither of which is true. This is not a treatment for obesity or the substantially overweight. Instead, performed skilfully and in the right circumstances, this well established, and highly successful technique is ideal for areas of body fat that will not respond to conventional diets and exercise regimes.

What does liposculpture involve?
This minor surgical procedure is performed in a day unit of a NHS hospital in Belfast, under sedation or general anaesthetic. During the procedure tiny incisions are made into the skin folds close to the problem area. Several litres of fluid are infiltrated into the area via a fine cannula, which helps break down the fat and allows it to be drawn out through a fine cannula (metal tube) and into a syringe. The length of time taken to perform this technique is totally dependant on the amount of fat that needs to be removed, and can range from half an hour to two hours. Patients are usually discharged from the hospital four to six hours later and advised to rest for a few days before returning to work.
How will I feel after the procedure?
During the procedure local anaesthetic is injected into the fat areas of concern, as a result any pain or discomfort is not felt until the following day. Most people describe the first day as feeling quite stiff and uncomfortable. Every individual's tolerance to discomfort varies, but pain relief is prescribed to all patients on discharge to be taken as instructed and if necessary.
How long will it be before I feel normal?
As postoperative discomfort is mainly related to bruising, most patients recover fairly quickly. It is usual for obvious bruising to start fading within a fortnight following surgery. Internal swelling can last in a noticeable fashion for up to six weeks, to help the shape and reduce the swelling; a support garment is given on discharge which must be worn for five to six weeks. It can take up to three months to lose all swelling and up to six months to achieve the end result. Patients are encouraged to resume normal exercise within a week and strenuous exercise in four weeks after surgery.
Is Liposculpture safe?
Liposculpture is generally considered one of the safest procedures performed in the cosmetic field today. Remember, the fat that needs to be removed is immediately below the skin and the technique does not involve any complicated manoeuvres to gain access to the fat bed, just a small puncture site on the skin surface and a fine tube to remove the fat. Most patients are discharged with antibiotic medication as a precautionary measure to prevent any postoperative infection developing.
