What does eye bag removal involve?
Blepharoplasty is the surgical removal of excess skin and pads of fat immediately above or below the eye area. This hour long, simple procedure is usually performed as a day case if carried out under local anaesthetic or as an overnight stay in hospital if performed under general anaesthetic. Incisions for the upper bags are neatly hidden in the natural fold of the upper eyelid and will quickly fade to blend in with the natural crease line. Incisions for the lower eye bag are neatly hidden below the lash line and will fade into insignificance within a matter of a few months. Tiny micro stitches are removed after four days.
How long will it be before I feel back to normal?
The eye area is one of the quickest healing areas on the face and generally people look remarkably well healed and almost back to normal within four weeks. Subtle improvements will continue to take place over a period of months and eventually incisions will fade to an almost undetectable level. Ladies are fortunate in that careful make-up application will ensure that any tell tale signs of healing incisions can be easily camouflaged after seven days.
Will it hurt?
No, this is not a painful procedure, although some patients have complained of a gritty sensation in the eyes. Antibiotic ointment is applied daily to the eye area until the micro stitches are removed to help alleviate this. It is unlikely that you will need any pain-killing tablets.
Is it safe?
Yes, this is a very safe procedure when you are in skilled and experienced hands. Great care and precision is taken during surgery to protect the eye itself and to ensure that just the right amount of tissue is removed.
Where do I go from here?
If you are interested in having a blepharoplasty or at least talking to an expert about the procedure, a consultation can be arranged for you to meet with a surgeon. He will discuss and explain the procedure, answer any of your concerns and assess your suitability for such surgery should you wish to go ahead.
