Ear Correction Surgery - Otoplasty

Ear Correction Surgery - Otoplasty
Ear correction surgery (otoplasty) is a minor surgical procedure that can correct overly prominent or protruding ears. Many individuals with noticeably protruding ears can experience severe levels of insecurity and self- consciousness that often develop in childhood and remain into adulthood. This simple operation can enhance the person's confidence and self- esteem with an added benefit of allowing new and varied hairstyles.

All surgery carried out in Belfast.

What does ear correction involve?
Ear correction surgery usually takes approximately 45 minutes per ear and is performed in hospital under local anaesthetic with sedation or under general anaesthetic. The surgeon will discuss this in detail with the patient during their consultation. The incision is made along the crease line behind the ear and the excess cartilage that is causing the ear to protrude is carefully removed. The ear is then pinned back along the fold to its new position.

How will I feel after the procedure?

Depending on the type of anaesthetic the surgeon recommends, you will either be discharged from hospital on the same day or required to stay overnight and discharged the following morning. It is normal to experience some swelling and bruising following surgery, but painkillers given to you after the procedure will alleviate any discomfort. A full head bandage is worn for 5 to 7 days after surgery, followed by a sports head band for a further week once the head bandage has been removed. It is recommended that you take approximately 1 week off work. Detailed post-operative information and advice will be provided and review appointments will be scheduled at the Medi-Cosmetic Surgery clinic.

Where do I go from here?

If you are interested in ear correction surgery or at least talking to an expert about the procedure, a consultation can be arranged for you to meet with a surgeon. He will discuss and explain the procedure, answer any of your concerns and assess your suitability for surgery. To book a free and confidential consultation, contact the clinic on 02890861186. We look forward to hearing from you.
