Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction
Many women suffer backache, shoulder pain, embarrassment and in some cases spine distortion as a result of very large breasts. Overly large breasts can reduce a person's self-confidence and significantly affect their personal relationships. Breast reduction surgery is reported as being one of the most worthwhile cosmetic operations in terms of improved quality of life, with an added advantage of increasing individual's choice of clothes and fashion styles.

Upcoming Consultation Dates
Friday 24th September
All surgery carried out in Belfast.

What does breast reduction surgery involve?

Breast reduction surgery is performed in hospital under general anaesthetic and involves removing a suitable segment of breast tissue and skin by incisions around the areola, vertically below the areola and in the crease beneath the breast. Both breasts are carefully aligned and the nipples repositioned.

How will I feel after the procedure?
The procedure may involve a 1 to 2 night stay in hospital. It is normal to experience a certain amount of swelling and bruising. Pain killers will alleviate any pain or discomfort following the procedure. It is advised that you take 2 weeks off work, resuming normal activities such as house work, light exercise and social activities after 2 weeks. Strenuous exercise such as jogging, golf, racquet sports etc, must be avoided for 6 weeks after surgery. Detailed post-operative information and advice will be provided and review appointments will be scheduled at the Medi-Cosmetic Surgery.

How long will it be before I feel back to normal?
Swelling and a variable amount of bruising will occur after surgery, but most bruising will have disappeared by the 3rd week. However, the swelling can take up to 3 months to subside completely. The scars may be red and obvious for a few months after surgery before they turn a silvery white colour. The process of scar maturation may take as long as two years to be completed.

Where do I go from here?
If you are interested in breast reduction surgery or at least talking to an expert about the procedure, a consultation can be arranged for you to meet with a surgeon.
